Wal-Mart imposes high costs on the taxpayers in the communities where it operates stores. According to a study conducted by the House Education and Workforce Committee's Democratic staff, a typical Wal-Mart store employing 200 workers costs American taxpayers $420,750 a year. This figure does not even include the billions of dollars Wal-Mart receives in subsidies every year. In addition, Wal-Mart is notorious for poor treatment of its workers. If you think Wal-Mart and the jobs it brings will benefit your community, take a close look at the information on our website before you decide. For more information, visit our homepage at http://walmartwatch.com.
In order to catalogue Wal-Mart’s explosive growth around the country, we have created this map database, which includes profiles for most current and planned U.S. Wal-Mart stores and distribution centers.
These profiles include: data regarding store size, proximity to nearest distribution center, type of development property and other information. We will continue to add data to the map on an ongoing basis and encourage you to submit information about your local Wal-Mart store, current or planned. We will review all information submitted and add your appropriate data to the map. Working together, we can build the most accurate and up-to-date information possible. With more than 4,000 units (stores and distribution centers) in the United States alone, Wal-Mart controls an enormous amount of real estate.
